Congrats on starting the challenge! Your first exercise is one of the most foundational of all exercises that I teach. I call it The “Simmer Down.”
Watch:
We all know that our thoughts and our emotions can affect our bodies. If you’re nervous, you may have tummy trouble for example. But most people don’t fully understand how the body can affect the mind and thoughts.
Your breath plays a powerful role is telling your body and your brain what is happening. If you read rapidly and shallowly in your chest, your body thinks that it should be on high alert. This type breathing activates your sympathetic nervous system, or your “stress response nervous system.”
Breathing deeply into your diaphragm (“belly breathing”) tells your body to calm down. This exercise is meant to move your breathing from your chest down to your belly.
Belly breathing activates your body’s parasympathetic nervous system, the system that calms your body down after the stress response has been triggered. You can duplicate that process whatever you want and calm yourself down by moving the breath down to your belly.
When to Use The “Simmer Down”:
Use the simmer down whatever you feel spun up, frazzled, overwhelmed, anxious, angry, frustrated, or burnt out.
Time:
5 Seconds
How Obvious Is It:
Totally incognito
